Friday, December 2nd, 2016 – Our 4th, 5th, and 8th graders are back, after three days and two nights at Mission Springs Outdoor Education Camp.  Faith Network of the East Bay connected La Escuelita with an anonymous donor who funded the camp stay and the Roger’s Family Foundation, through NGLC in Oakland, funded the buses that got our kids there and back.

“I’m glad I came to science camp because I learned some cool new things about nature. My favorite activity was the solo walk because I discovered how peaceful it can be, walking by myself in nature.”

“My favorite activity was the night hike because it was dark and we got to see salamanders. I’m glad I came to science camp because we were so close to nature and learned a lot about it too.”

“I’m glad I came to science camp because it gave me a new experience away from home. I enjoyed the blind fold walk activity the most because I learned the importance of trusting others and being trustworthy.”

“I’m glad I came to science camp because this was my first time away from the city. My favorite activity was night hike because we learned about nocturnal animals and played the bat game.”

Diego, 4th grader, writes, “It was cold, but really fun. I went rock climbing. I slept in a cabin. I went night hiking. I went to the beach. We went to the garden and got to hold chickens and put banana slugs on our noses at the creek and check if the creek was healthy.”

Vanora, 4th grader, writes, “On the first day we were in some groups. I was in Black Bears, AKA Betsy. After we were in our groups we played an activity. Then we did some hiking. After that we ate lunch. After lunch we went into our cabin. The cabin did not look like a cabin. It looked like an inn. There were two floors. My roommates were Kaylena, Lorie, Nisya, Bri, and I. Our next door neighbors were Ashly, Ivay, Valeria, Abi, and Itzel. The Caperone was Leo’s mom and Abel’s mom. For breakfast there were waffles and sausage. There was a Team 1 and a Team 2. I was in Team 2. We went to the climbing tower. The activities I did were the ocean and land with a ball, the beach such as tug of war with sea animals and an inner tube, make a sand shark, taking a painted lady butterflies. So that is all the beach things we did. And, by the way, it was really cold. We went on a little hike. We saw a banana slug. We had to put the banana slug on our nose for banana slug seconds. Alan wanted to put it on his hand and Lorie didn’t want to touch it. My nature name is Viper.”
